Description:
Collection Isabelle Maeght. Riopelle was interested in the string games played by the Inuit, and a whole series of works resulted from this theme. It was the subject of an exhibition titled Ficelles et autres jeux, presented at the Canadian Cultural Center, in Paris, and at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, from June 15 to October 12, 1972. This painting is titled Avatac, after the name of a float used by Inuit hunters using a harpoon. The float serves as a beacon to the location of the harpoon underwater.
