Description:
Depicts the mythological hunter Adonis, who was mortally wounded during the hunt by a boar (the boar is shown coming out from under Adonis' legs.) The sculpture was commissioned by Isabella de 'Medici for the grounds of Villa Baroncelli in Florence. The sculpture was held in high esteem and was even considered in the mid-17th century to be a work of Michelangelo. This is the finished marble, a terracotta version (1560, considered to be the model) is in the Bode-Museum, Berlin.
