Description:
From a special exhibit on woodcarving "Fece di scoltura di legname e colorì" at the Uffizi, May 24-August 28, 2016. The work is in a private collection. Jesse is a figure described in the Bible as the father of David, who became the king of the Israelites. Because of this lineage, which extends to Jesus Christ, the iconography of the Tree of Jesse developed, showing the descendants as branches. The most typical form shows the figure of Jesse, reclining or sleeping (perhaps by analogy to Adam when his rib was taken) at the base. From his side or his navel springs the trunk of a tree or vine which ascends, showing the ancestors of Christ, and at the top, Mary and Jesus.
