Description:
|
Roman copy of the 2nd century CE after a Greek model of the 5th-4th centuries BCE. The female type with a veil that is held in place it by a high diadem follows the iconography for Demeter (Ceres), the goddess who protects the agricultural harvest. Perhaps it is an idealized portrait of a member of the imperial Roman family. The piece was drawn in 1570, when it was still part of the collection of the Cesi family, who were also tied to the Altemps, though two different branches. The tip of the nose is restored; the diadem was originally decorated with small pearls, now missing. (Source: Gallery of Ancient Art; http://ancientrome.r u/art/artworken/)
