Notes:
REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Shirt, decorated with supplementary weft metallic thread, a technique known as "songket" in Indonesia. Part of man's costume; shirt is one central panel with neck cut out, two side gussets and sleeves. Original accession sheet gives the provenience as Palembang, South Sumatra. However, this style of shirt is not illustrated in the literature, except for two examples from the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra [Kahn Majlis 1984:plate 99; Gittinger 1979:plate 74] rather than from Palembang in South Sumatra. A South Sumatra assignation for this cloth, therefore, would have to be considered tentative. This costume may have been sewn out of part of a large rectangular "songket" cloth, which is a well known type in both the traditions of Minangkabau and Palembang.
