The cloth has various uses: cloth exchanged at marriage, food covering or wrapping gifts. It is woven against natural cotton ground. Tampan means "ship cloths". This piece may not be a true tampan which is described in the literature (below) as a "small square ceremonial cloth". This item is not consistent with the other tampans in the collection. See "SPLENDID SYMBOLS: TEXTILES AND TRADITIONS IN INDONESIA" by Mattiebelle Gittinger, published by Textile Museum, Washington, D.C. 1979, pp 88-97. See entry for X76.1365 for background information on "tampan" and "pelepai" textiles from Lampung, Sumatra.
