REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Consists of two panels sewn together warpwise, then sewn closed at the warp ends to form a tube skirt. Handspun(?) cotton. Natural dyes; indigo for blue and Morinda citrifolia for red. A typical Savunese woman's sarong. For a discussion of Savunese textiles, see Fox 1977a:97-100. A range of Savunese sarongs is illustrated in Majlis 1984:277-278. For a photo illustrating the manner of wearing a Savunese sarong, see Fox 1977b:121. Color and design features of woman's sarongs on Savu identify the moiety and subgroup of the wearer. This cloth probably represents the "Hubi Au" (="greater blossom") moeity [Fox 1977a:99 and Gittinger 1979:187]. This particular sarong also shows the addition warp float decoration described and illustrated in Gittinger 1979:fig.147. From accompanying notes: 1st half of the 20th Century. Island of Sabu.
