REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: The term "sarong" used in this sense refers to a particular size and style of batik cloth [Elliott 1984:32]. The characteristic feature is the "kepala" [="head], a vertical section with a motif which contrasts with the motif of the "badan" [="body]. The following information is from the original accession material, presumably from Kent Watters: "Batik Tiga Negri" (= "three country batik"): contains design elements associated with three different regions of Java (Central, eastern North Coast, western North Coast). Such cloths were often initiated in one region and then sent to other regions for completion. Very unusual panel and background motif (frangipani blossoms). Never used; still with original finish. Circa 1920. A very special piece. For a discussion of "batik tiga negeri", see Elliott 1984:170-173.
