Notes:
Ma Wan was a follower of Tung Yÿ¼an, Mi Fu, and the Yÿ¼an master Huang Kung-wang. He adopted the philosophy of Huang and other Yÿ¼an masters of using landscape painting as a means of self-expression. Although possessing a classical education, as a loyalist he chose reclusion away from society rather than serve the foreign reign of the Mongols. On their demise in 1368 he returned to civil service under the Hong-wu emperor. This loyal and upright attitude pervaded much of Yÿ¼an period painting circles.
