REMARKS BY RENS HERINGA (1995): This cloth is not a genuine Javanese batik, but a printed imitation manufactured in the Netherlands for the Indonesian market. The cloths were refused by Javanese and Chinese women of means, but were used as daily wear by poorer women, especially in outlying areas such as the Sumatran plantation regions.
