Cuba - Province of Camaguey - Vanero: In the fertile sugar lands in the south-central part of the Province, about ten miles of so west of the city of Camaguey. The sugar lands of Cuba are rich in color as well as product, for the greens of the growing cane and the palms and the blue of the sky make a bright background for the cut cane which soon takes on a brownish gold tint on the floor of the field. A sugar cart is beginning to load the cane of this field which has just been cut and will take its load to the transfer station at the railroad about a mile away to central Vertientes about 10 or 15 miles farther west. Cane fields of Cuba are seldom if ever burned to strip the leaves from the cane because most of the harvest occurs in the very dry season with its brisk winds which might easily turn the burning into a catastrophe. the fields do not take on the dinginess of burned sugar lands, but retain the fresh, bright color of their growth.
