Governor's Palace and palace green - the entrance gates of the Governor's palace in Williamsburg are at the end of the spacious palace green. A long approach avenue lined with formally planted trees was a typical setting for an important building in colonial Virginia. Records prove that the palace green was planted with catalpas. The measurements for the oval before the forecourt along with other architectural details were recorded by Thomas Jefferson during his years of residence in the palace as governor. The bodleian plate showing the splayed wall, enclosing the palace forecourt, was authenticated by archaeological excavations in the area, the usual kip engravings of English estates from his Britannia Illustrata of 1717 shows one or even a series of forecourts to be the fashion.
