Hendry County Clewiston: Sugar harvest in a field near the southwest banks of lake Okeechobee. the cane field has been burned over in the prescribed manner to remove the leaves from the stalks; the stripped cane has been cut down by the swift strokes with which the cutters wield their sharp machetes. now the machine crane scoops up huge bundles of the cane and drops it into the tractor-drawn carts which when completely filled go to the railroad about a mile away and are emptied into open freight cars which then take the cane to the Clewiston Sugar Mill about three miles away. Clewiston is the "sugar capital [capitol]" of Florida and the mill is owned and operated by the U. S. sugar corp.
