The great building of the College of William and Mary, now known as the wren building, was erected at middle plantation, the site of Williamsburg, in 1695-98 from plans said to have been prepared by Sir Christopher Wren. It is the oldest academic building standing in the united states. The marble statue of Virginia's beloved royal governor, Norborne Berkeley, Baron de Botetourt, originally stood under the arcade in the capitol.
