Tarpon Springs, Florida. Porters carrying "wreaths" of sponges across the courtyard of the tarpon springs sponge exchange on an auction day. The sponges are kept stored behind the Copenwork iron doors in the cell-like rooms which make up the one-story building which surrounds the three sides of the courtyard. Some years back, the sponge auctions were held in the courtyard, but now the offerings are placed on the roofed-over walk which fronts the building (information copied from negative envelope).
