Public jail - Built in 1701 for the Virginia colony, this stout prison served primarily for the imprisonment of the persons awaiting trial at the near-by capitol. The building was enlarged as the colony grew and contained cells for debtors as well as criminal prisoners. Minor offenders were punished in the stocks and pillory in from of the prison. The jail was restored in 1935.
