Lincoln Highway; monument marking LaSalle's trail near South Bend, Ind. [marker reads: Robert Rene Cavalier Sieur De La Salle. French Scholar and explorer. First white man to visit this region, passing from the St. Joseph River to the Kankakee River. Crossed this land December 5, 1679. To commemorate the visit of La Salle. The Board of Park Commissioners erected this tablet on land donated for the purpose by Robert O. Myler.
