General court chamber, capitol - The governor and council performed their judicial functions as "The general court," the highest court in the colony. Here they served as a court of appeals and in certain cases, as a court of original jurisdiction. The general court chamber occupied the lower floor of the west wing of the capitol, immediately beneath the council chamber, and it was here that "Blackboard's" pirates and other notorious criminals of the colony received their sentence. The walnut seat made chairwise for the governor is in the center at the far end of the chamber and is surmounted by the arms of Queen Anne. in front of the governor's seat, and below it, is the clerk's table covered with a green baize cloth. The long benches are copied from two original English forms. The glass lustre and four glass branches have been reproduced from early 18th century originals. The hanging lantern is used in accordance with the old records.
