REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: This "tampan" is similar to Gittinger 1972:Plate 38, whose weaver, according to Gittinger, used the human figure and two confronting animals found in a small section of another cloth. Krui weavers commonly selected segments from larger compositions for depiction, thus making Krui cloths incomprehensible by themselves [Gittinger 1972:110]. Gittinger groups the "tampan" in Plate 38 with others having a similar composition, a composition which is found through four geographical regions. She traces the design complex from the South Coast to the mountains and seemingly on to the West Coast [Gittinger 1972:110]. See entry for X76.1365 for background information on "tampan" and "pelepai" textiles from Lampung, Sumatra.
