REMARKS BY RACHAEL GROSSMAN (1975): This textile is probably from Surakarta (Solo), but possibly from Jogjakarta (Solo uses less white in their designs than Jogja); this is a woman's garment worn over the shoulders or around the torso; it is in the "alas-alasan" style (floral preponderence); designs include Mount Meru (triangular motif representing India's sacred mountain), peacocks, and half a "Garuda" wing. According to the definitions given in Elliott [1984:68-69], this design would be classed as "semen" rather than "alas-alasan", due to the presence of the pavilion motif. "Tumpal" is the name applied to the triangular border motif.
