REMARKS BY ROY HAMILTON (1988): Constructed of four panels sewn together. Purchased new from a local trader in the weekly market in Wolowaru town, the capital of Wolowaru Subdistrict. Made nearby in Mbuli Lo'o village. This sarong is an example of current production for market sale, using synthetic fiber yarns and chemical dyes. The pattern is one of the most traditional Lio patterns, known as "nepa te'a". "Nepa" refers to the pattern itself and "te'a" is the Lio term for the color yellow. See X88.1273 for an example of a higher quality, natural dye sarong in the "lawo nepa te'a" style. See X88.1268 for an example of the blue color version of this pattern, known as "lawo nepa mite".
