REMARKS BY ROY HAMILTON (1988): Constructed of two panels sewn together. Made of synthetic, commercially dyed yarn. Typical of a plain, inexpensive man's sarong made for sale. The sale of such men's sarongs is one of the chief sources of income in the village of Wolotopo. Agricultural conditions are particularly harsh in this precipitous coastal village, fostering a dependence on non-agricultural economic activities. Wolotopo weavers make women's sarongs for their own use the same as weavers in neighboring villages. Additionally they have developed a specialty in producing men's sarongs in large numbers which they carry on foot to the town of Ende for sale. Rather than spending the entire day in the marketplace waiting for an uncertain sale, they immediately sell their cloths to petty traders who routinely conduct business in the market. The weavers often re-invest the sale price in materials for the next sarong. The small profit which remains is used to buy household necessities, especially food, which is then carried back to Wolotopo. Weavers are frequently encountered on the trail from Ende to Wolotopo by 8:00 a.m. already returning to their village to resume work. Each sarong involves a minimum of approximately 40 hours of labor.
