REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: The term "sarong" used in this sense refers to a particular size and style of batik cloth [Elliott 1984:32]. The characteristic feature is the "kepala" [="head"], or vertical section with a motif which contrasts with the motif of the "badan" [="body"]. This cloth is still joined at the ends with a flat-felled seam to form tube sarong; this is the way it would have been worn. The tube-shaped sarong is considered less formal than the flat "kain" worn in a wrap-around fashion [Raadt-Apell 1982:80]. From accompanying notes: "Child's sarong. North Coast Java. Pekalongan? Late 19th Century." From accompanying tag: "Sarong for child, from Cirebon. Design name 'kelengan orang ayu'. 70 years old." For similar cloths, see X83.884, X83.885 and X83.888. For an illustration of a similar cloth, see Kahlenberg 1977:63-64. "The selvedges are patterned with fine stripes apparently imitating a selvedge treatment still found on many Indonesian woven textiles".
