Notes:
REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Consists of two loom lengths sewn together selvage to selvage. Was once sewn closed at the ends to form a sarong. Used in Indonesia; may have been made in Java or India. Collected during the decade prior to World War II. Weft surface plain weave, blue wefts with very fine white wefts at about 1/8" intervals. The general "hand" of this fabric and the sophisticated "plaid" arrangement of yarns and other factors may indicate that the cloth may have been woven in the south of India for Indonesian use. However for a simple appearing fabric, it has a very subtle sophistication.
