REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: "Selendang", used as a shawl or waist wrap. Decorated with the "songket" technique of supplementary weft with metallic thread. Both gold and silver colored wrapped yarns used. The accession sheet lists the provenience as Klungkung, and indeed "songket" work is associated with the Klungkung area [Covarrubias 1937:196], but the technique is also more generally associated with the aristocrtic class in former princely courts [Gittinger 1979:141]. Would have been used as an item of aristocratic attire at ceremonial occasions, or possibly as a costume item in dance and theatrical performances.
