REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: "Selimut" or man's hip or shoulder wrap. Consists of three panels sewn together. Commercial cotton thread. Chemical and natural dyes; the predominant red is probably from Morinda citrifolia. Thread count: warp 68 e.p.i. (double, two-ply yarn) weft 20 e.p.i. For a general discussion of Atoni weaving see Schulte Nordholt 1971:41-46. Made circa 1958. Purchased by Steve Alpert from the royal family of Baun Village, Amarasi. Amarasi is one of the former political domains of the Atoni people in West Timor. The plain white center panel flanked by ikat decorated lateral panels is characteristic of cloths from Amarasi [Gittinger 1979:177; Cunningham 1967:75]. Two similar Amarasi cloths are illustrated in Kahn Majlis 1984:282. According to Steve Alpert, although it is a contemporary cloth, the quality of the work is finer than any he observed being made there in 1973. In addition to serving as clothing, cloths on Timor traditionally played an important part in exchange cycles among allied kin groups, particularly at weddings and funerals [Gittinger 1979:21-22; for a detailed analysis of a typical Timorese alliance exchange system, see Forman 1980:152-177].
