REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: "Poritutu roto" or ceremonial banner; "plangi" or tie-dye technique. Initials "B.M." hand printed at one end. Early 20th Century. The following information taken from Gittinger 1979:205, which also includes a photo of a similar cloth: "In some villages, such textiles were regarded as sacred cloths and were hung on poles before the house of a dead person to announce the death. Elsewhere, they were used as clothing pieces by both men and women".
