Notes:
REMARKS BY RACHAEL GROSSMAN (1975): "Parang Barong", related to "Parang Rusak"; a design originated by Sultan Agung in the 1750s; it is a king's sarong; only the nobility are permitted to wear the "parang rusak" in the court. These comments may or may not accurately apply to this particular cloth. "Parang" and several other patterns were indeed forbidden to commoners by the sultans of Jogjakarta and Surakarta in the 18th Century. However, such decrees were not necessarily heeded at a distance from the court centers and anyway have long since ceased to carry weight [Elliott 1984:68]. In more recent times, these "forbidden" patterns are commercially available in Javanese cities like any other. They are valued as "traditional" Central Javanese patterns and are extremely common.
