REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Cloth fragment; "songket" technique or supplementary weft with metallic yarn. This piece is probably from the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, who are well known for their "songket" work. Traditional Minangkabau costume includes a variety of belts, waist cloths and shoulder cloths, from which such a piece might come. However, the "songket" technique was also represented in the textiles of other parts of Sumatra, especially in South Sumatra and in Aceh.
