REMARKS BY ROY HAMILTON (1988): Constructed of four panels sewn together. Field collected in the hamlet of manufacture. This sarong is a typical example of the inexpensive sarongs made for sale using synthetic fiber yarns and chemical dyes. In Kuraoka hamlet and in the neighboring village of Jopu, this type of sarong production has completely replaced the production of more traditional sarongs using cotton yarns and natural dyes. These sarongs are marketed by village traders in the weekly market in nearby Wolowaru town. Other traders who work over broader areas also take such sarongs to village markets in other part of Ende District and to the urban markets in the towns of Maumere and Ende. The style of this sarong is "lawo manu" ("manu"= chicken). Although bird motifs are apparently a long-standing tradition in the area, this particular version of the chicken motif is relatively recent. It became popular in the 1960s and has remained one of the most popular styles. It can frequently be seen worn by village women. Production and marketing in this area have become quite fashion conscious, with a constant effort directed toward the creation of new patterns. The chicken motif has been particularly successful and is now made in sizeable numbers in a variety of hamlets.
