REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON THE BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Batik tulis or hand-drawn batik. Floral style and color indicate origin in the North Coast batik region of Java. Probably aniline dyes. Collected in 1938. The term "kain panjang" [="long cloth"] refers to a particular size and style of batik cloth [see Elliott 1984:34]. Once worn by both men and women as a wrap-around skirt; in more recent times primarily a woman's garment. According to Rachael Grossman (1975): Probably made of a younger woman because of the lighter colors.
