REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Made from five pieces of cloth sewn together; two front panels, one back panel, two sleaves. "Baju" (Malay = "blouse") is the term given in the accession material; "Kalambi" is the usual term for Iban jackets. The longer than usual length of this jacket and the presence of the sleaves is said to indicate a woman's jacket [Palmieri & Ferentinos 1979:78; Kahn Majlis 1984:plate 660]. However, an interesting photo of a man wearing a similar jacket appears in Furness 1902:78. Handspun(?) and commercial cotton thread. Natural and commercial dyes. Back panels hemmed with an additional strip of commercial cotton cloth. The badge on the back and the hem band are woven in tapestry technique [see Gittinger 1979:223] using commercial yarns.
