REMARKS BY RACHAEL GROSSMAN (1975): This is a "parang barong", a particular design once reserved for use only by the king; probably from Jogjakarta; a similar pattern called "parang rusak" (="broken sword") was designed by Sultan Agung in the 1750s; it symbolizes the strength of knighthood and was restricted in use (only the nobility could wear it at court). See illustration in Langewis & Wagner 1964:plate 59.
