REMARKS BY ANNE & JOHN SUMMERFIELD (1990): Close examination of the center panel of this textile suggests that the supplementary motifs were not embroidered in the sense that they were needled in after the cloth was removed from the loom. These motifs, inspected from the back of the textile, consist of threads all parallel to the weft. No threads are pierced as they would have been if the motifs were embroidered with a needle. These motifs may have been made with small bobbins of different colored threads or needled in during the weaving as supplementary weft.
