REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: A single panel of cloth, presumably a fragment of a "tapis" or woman's sarong. To make a complete "tapis", two such panels would be sewn together selvage to selvage, then sewn closed at the ends to form a tube sarong. Striped handwoven cotton, decorated with embroidery and appliqued mirror pieces. This cloth was purchesed in the Netherlands by George Ellis in 1969. The tag which accompanied the cloth at time of purchase read: "Z. Sumatra / Benkoelen / Kaoer" [= South Sumatra / Bengkulu / Kauer]. The Kauer people inhabit the southern coast of Bengkulu Province. The use of appliqued mirror pieces, known locally as "cermuk" is consistant with the assignation to the Kauer people [Gittinger 1979:84]. BIBLIOGAPHY: Gittinger, Mattiebelle. 1979. SPLENDID SYMBOLS: TEXTILES AND TRADITIONS IN INDONESIA. Washington D.C., The Textile Museum.
