Notes:
REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: "Selendang" or shawl, with warp fringe. Fringe tied with palm leaf fiber. Handspun(?) cotton thread. Probably natural dyes; indigo for blue, Morinda citrifolia for red-brown, and overdyeing of these two dyes for black. Thread count: warp 85 e.p.i.; weft 30 e.p.i. From the Lio domain in east central Flores, centered around the town of Wolowaru. According to the original accession information from Kent Watters: Mid 20th Century; worn once each year during traditional ceremony as head cloth or dance shawl. For a discussion of Lio weaving, see Watters 1977:87-89. For illustrations of similar "selendangs", see Gittinger 1979:170; Maxwell 1976:30. For a general discussion of the distribution of Florinese weaving styles, see Maxwell 1980:141-154.
